Rollin’ on the river

Our host and guide: storyteller, author, river rat, and Delta celebrity Hank Burdine

Hank and Bo, self-proclaimed river rats

Tuesday afternoon saw us climbing into jon boats* with our guides, Hank Burdine and his longtime partner in crime, Bo Weevil.

*Per Wikipedia, a jon boat is a flat-bottomed boat constructed of aluminum, fiberglass, wood, or polyethelene with one, two, or three seats, usually bench type. They are suitable for fishing, hunting, and cruising. The nearly flat hull of a jon boat tends to ride over the waves rather than cut through them as a V-hull might which allows the boat to operate in very shallow water.

Can you tell Dr. Waggoner is glad to be back on the Mississippi?

There may have been a little bit of jockeying for the lead with these two boats.

We pulled into Lunar Chute, where the water was much quieter. Got the two boats alongside each other, and Bo and Hank commenced ta telling stories, as folks around there would say.

While we were in the quieter waters of the chute, Hank surprised us by treating us to some poetry recitations. (Pictured here with his first mate, Boudreaux.)
